Great Britain fears Russia: We must prepare for war within 3 years

"The British Army must be ready for three years to fight an 'axis of unrest' of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea."

This is what the British Chief of General Staff, Sir Roly Walker, has warned, as he emphasized that the conflict is not inevitable.

He predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will abandon the invasion of Ukraine and after that Moscow, win or lose, "will seek revenge" against countries such as Great Britain that supported the Ukrainian armed forces.

"The point here is when you think they (the Russians) have surrendered, they will come back venting to get their revenge," he told reporters on the sidelines of an annual military conference.

Speaking rarely bluntly for a serving officer, General Walker also warned of the potential of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Iran's desire to develop nuclear weapons and the threat posed by North Korea.

He described how these countries are building a relationship with each other, sharing weapons and technologies, and how this challenge could converge from 2027 to 2028.

"That is why we will reach this point by 2027-2028. This convergence may have reached a kind of mutual singularity and the capability for a specific crisis. A problem in one area is likely to cause a benevolent explosion in another and therefore it is a global problem seen from different perspectives around the world," he said.

Given the threats, General Walker said there is an "urgent need" for the British military to rebuild its ability to deter future wars with credible combat power.

The commander also warned that the military would lose out if it stuck with old ideas about warfare instead of adapting to embrace new technologies that are transforming the battlefield.

The general said he aims to double the military's ability to fight and kill by 2027 and destroy an enemy force at least three times their size by the end of the decade.

"I am saying that we are not on an inexorable path to war, but what we have is an absolute urgency to restore strong credible power in order to guarantee its prevention," he said.

His comments come as the new government in London has launched a defense review that could lead to cuts to skills unless the Treasury commits to a significant increase in the defense budget. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to increase defense spending to 2.5% of national income, but has yet to specify a timeframe.
