US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that he will hold talks with Danish officials next week regarding who will own the island of Greenland. Trump has spoken out in favor of taking control of the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.
Rubio's statement to reporters, after a closed-door meeting with Senate members, comes a day after the White House said US President Donald Trump is considering options, including the use of military force, to buy Greenland.
Concerns about the future of Greenland have returned after the unilateral US military operation in Venezuela on Saturday, which arrested the country's President Nicolas Maduro and raised fears that something similar could happen to Greenland.
The Trump administration argues that Greenland is critical to US security, while Denmark responds that any attack would mean the end of the NATO military alliance, to which both countries belong.
Rubio said that “if the president identifies a threat to the national security of the United States, every president retains the option to address it by military means.” However, he added that as a diplomat, he prefers to resolve such issues in other ways.
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that Rubio had a telephone conversation with him, in which he ruled out the possibility of an invasion of Greenland.
European leaders have issued a joint statement arguing that "Greenland belongs to its people and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations," reiterating support for the region's sovereignty.
