Emily Gregory, a small business owner and Democrat, won a special election Tuesday to represent Florida's 87th House District, which includes President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach County.
With her victory, Republicans lost a district they won in 2024 by a double-digit margin to Democrats.
Gregory's victory in a Palm Beach County district that includes Mar-a-Lago gives Democrats a symbolic and strategic boost in a state where Republicans have traditionally held supermajorities. That's true even though the outcome ultimately won't change control of the Florida legislature, Politico reports.
As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Gregory had won just over 51 percent of the vote, compared to just under 49 percent for Republican Jon Maples, with more than 95 percent of ballots counted. CNN and Decision Desk HQ declared the race won at about 7:40 p.m. ET. The Associated Press reported that Gregory led Maples by 797 votes, or 2.4 percentage points, when nearly all votes were counted.
Maples, a former local council member who had been endorsed by Trump, was narrowly defeated in a race that drew national attention because of its location and timing, amid a series of Democratic victories in by-elections and special elections.
The seat had been vacant since last year when Republican Mike Caruso left the legislature to take a seat in the district. Caruso had won the seat in 2024 by a margin of 19 points.
