United States President Donald Trump said a recently seized ship may have been a "gift from China," without clarifying which ship it was.
In an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box," Trump said that US authorities had detained a ship with suspicious contents, adding that it could be a shipment from China.
He stressed that this had surprised him, given that, according to him, there is a good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"Yesterday we caught a ship that had some stuff on it that wasn't very nice, maybe a gift from China, I don't know. But I was a little surprised, but because I have a very good relationship and I thought I had a good understanding with (Chinese) President Xi (Jinping)," he said on CNBC's "Squawk Box."
The White House did not provide additional details on the incident, while the nature of the cargo or its destination remains unclear.
CNN reported earlier that US intelligence has assessed that China could prepare deliveries of air defense systems to Iran in the coming weeks. In this context, Trump had previously warned of consequences for Beijing in the event of supplying weapons to Tehran.
However, in recent statements, he has been more reserved, relativizing the situation and considering it part of the dynamics of the conflict.
Trump is expected to visit Beijing next month, at a sensitive moment for relations between the two countries.
