Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Russian President Vladimir Putin in China on Tuesday, becoming the first leader of a European Union country to meet in person with the Russian president since Russia's aggression against Ukraine began in February 2022.
The two leaders met in Beijing ahead of an international forum on one of Chinese President Xi Jinping's policies.
Their meeting, which focused on Hungary's access to Russian energy, marked the end of nearly 20 months in which Western leaders avoided contact with Putin over his invasion of Ukraine.
"Hungary has never wanted to clash with Russia, Hungary has always wanted to expand contacts. Bilateral ties between the two countries have weakened due to EU sanctions against Moscow ," Orban said.
