After attacks, Assembly of Experts meets online to elect Khamenei's

Iran's Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting the country's supreme leader, convened virtually today, Fars reported. The decision to hold meetings remotely comes after attacks this week on compounds belonging to the body.

The assembly consists of 88 senior clerics, elected to oversee and, when necessary, appoint the supreme leader.

According to Iranian state media, US-Israeli strikes hit its compound in Tehran on Monday. A day later, Israeli military spokeswoman Effie Defrin confirmed a strike on a compound in the holy city of Qom.

"The results of the attack are still being reviewed. If there are confirmed results, we will provide updates accordingly," Defrin stated at a press conference.

According to Fars, no assembly session was taking place in the hit building at the time of the attack.

The attacks come at a time when, according to the same agency, the Assembly of Experts is in the "final stages" of selecting a new supreme leader, although the date of his announcement has not been announced.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has not officially announced a successor. With his departure, the supreme leader's powers have been temporarily transferred to a three-person council: the country's president, the head of the judiciary and a senior cleric from the Guardian Council. The latter is a 12-member body of lawyers that oversees the activities of the Iranian parliament.
