Hurricane Melissa has weakened to a Category 4 storm, according to reports from the US National Hurricane Center, as the hurricane passes through Jamaica.
The center of the hurricane was about 10 miles south of Montego Bay, the NHC said in its latest update. It added that Melissa has maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour.
The center of the hurricane is likely to move away from land and enter the Caribbean Sea within the next hour or two.
Jamaica's climate change minister, Matthew Samuda, says Hurricane Melissa has had a "catastrophic effect" on Jamaica, with many homes already flooded and destroyed.
Samuda said authorities are receiving reports of public infrastructure, hospitals and safe places being severely damaged.
