The supermarket doors opening, the mother walking hand in hand with her one and a half year old daughter towards the exit, and the father nearby, with the shopping cart. Nothing could have predicted that, in a few moments, a stranger would jump forward in an attempt to kidnap the girl.
"These were tense moments, we are very shocked," the parents told the police after the aggressor's arrest. A 47-year-old Romanian man, a non-resident, is in prison, as ordered by prosecutor Giulia Angeleri, awaiting questioning to confirm the arrest.
"We didn't immediately understand the seriousness of the situation. More than a kidnapping, we thought he wanted to hurt her," writes Corriere della Sera.
Why the 47-year-old targeted and pulled the little girl by the leg, breaking her femur, is among the questions police are seeking answers to. It does not appear that the family knew him.
"I realized that the human instinct is that of survival. Seeing your daughter in danger was terrifying and the reaction was immediate. You don't think, you act," added the minor's father, Matteo.
It all happened on Saturday at lunchtime, in about thirty seconds; terrifying moments, filmed by Esselunga's cameras.
"The supermarket was full, I didn't expect something like this," continues the girl's father, who initially thought the 47-year-old was sitting down to tie his shoes. The man, as soon as he entered, crossed paths with the family; he grabbed the girl by the leg and lifted her up, while the mother tried to hold her. The father jumped towards the 47-year-old, accused of attempted kidnapping, aggravated by the victim's age, as well as of injury, also aggravated. Placed in a cast, the girl has been released from the hospital: "I can say that she went well in the accident," says the parent, thanking those who intervened.
"The girl is smiling today, with a cast, and playing."
By hitting the 47-year-old man in the back, the father managed to throw him to the ground, helped by supermarket security and other customers, and handed him over to the police. “I heard piercing screams, the mother was screaming ‘my daughter’,” says a witness, who prefers to remain anonymous. “He was holding the girl tightly behind him, she was dragged to the ground too. The man wouldn’t let go.”
When stopped by police, the 47-year-old, who speaks Italian with difficulty, said nothing. He had a passport and 5 euros in his pocket.
He has no previous convictions, and does not appear to have any psychiatric pathology. There are only a few records of border checks for him, due to his wanderings. He seems to have arrived in Bergamo recently. Two days earlier, he had been checked by the police at the entrance to a hospital emergency room; he was seeking shelter, without being aggressive. At that time, it is said that he had asked to return to Romania by ambulance.
The kidnapping attempt is an "extremely important fact," emphasizes Mayor Elena Carnevali. But it also fits into "a broader context where we are registering an increase in situations of fragility and social unrest, which however cannot be translated into crimes."
Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also reacted to the case: "Now no tolerance. No reduction," he wrote on Facebook.
