French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "end the attacks on Gaza and return to the ceasefire."
Macron's appeal comes after Israel resumed bombing after a failure to reach a second phase of the ceasefire. Through a post on X, the French leader announced that he had a phone call with the Israeli prime minister, where he, among other things, stated that he had asked the latter that humanitarian aid should resume immediately.
"I just spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The release of all hostages and the security of Israel are priorities for France. I called on the Israeli Prime Minister to end the attacks on Gaza and return to the ceasefire, which Hamas must accept. I stressed that humanitarian aid must resume immediately. We will continue to work on the Arab reconstruction plan and the essential return to a political horizon based on the two-state solution, which is the only path to peace and security for both peoples.
"I also called on Israel to strictly respect the ceasefire it had pledged in Lebanon. This request applies to all parties in order to guarantee the safety of the civilian population on both sides of the Blue Line ," the French president wrote on X.
Israel bombed the southern Beirut stronghold of Hamas's ally Hezbollah on Friday for the first time after a four-month ceasefire.
"Regarding Lebanon, following my discussions with the Lebanese President on Friday and this conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister, we have decided to work together. The monitoring mechanism must be strengthened to fully restore Lebanon's sovereignty. This includes a complete withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territory and support for restoring the state's monopoly on weapons.
"Finally, following my telephone conversation on Friday with Syrian President Al-Charaa, we discussed with the Israeli Prime Minister the stabilization of Syria and the restoration of its full sovereignty. We will continue to coordinate closely with the Israeli authorities on all these priority issues. The Middle East needs stability. Only a just and lasting peace can guarantee a future for all," Macron concluded.
