Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and President Donald Trump have discussed "productive negotiations" towards an "economic prosperity deal" between the UK and the US, Downing Street said.
The two leaders discussed a potential deal in a phone call on Sunday and agreed that negotiations would "continue apace," according to a statement.
A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump this evening.
"The President began the conversation by wishing His Majesty the King his best wishes and good health.
"Discussing Ukraine, the Prime Minister briefed the President on productive discussions at the Coalition of the Willing meeting in Paris this week. The leaders agreed on the need to continue collective pressure on Putin."
They agreed to stay in touch in the coming days."
Earlier this week, Mr Trump announced a new 25% tariff on all imported cars – threatening the UK manufacturers' biggest export market.
Signing an executive order on Wednesday, Trump said the tax would begin on April 2 - what he has called "liberation day."
British manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce are the most affected by the tariffs.
But the government has signaled it will not retaliate – mirroring its response to tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed globally by the Trump administration earlier this month.
Tariffs are a key part of Trump's efforts to reshape global trade relations.
He plans to impose what he calls “reciprocal” taxes on “liberation day” that would match tariffs and sales taxes imposed by other nations. He has already imposed a 20% tax on all imports from China.
He also imposed 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, with a lower 10% tariff on Canadian energy products, in addition to duties on all steel and aluminum imports, including those from the UK.
