Deadly attacks in Gaza, Biden: Al-Shifa hospital must be protected at all costs

The US President, Joe Biden, said that the largest hospital in Gaza, Shifa "must be protected". Fighting between Israeli forces and fighters from Hamas - a terrorist organization designated by the US and the European Union - has surrounded the hospital, forcing thousands of people to flee.

"My hope and expectation is that there will be less intrusive actions" by Israeli forces, Biden said in the Oval Office. For three days, the Shifa hospital has been left without electricity and water, while gun battles and bombings outside the hospital building have made the situation even more difficult. "We don't want to see fighting in hospitals.

We want patients to be protected. We want hospitals to be protected. We've talked to the Israeli government about this issue and they've said they share the view that they don't want to see fighting in hospitals,"  said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Sullivan said there are no easy answers to how Israel pushes ahead with military operations around hospitals, but added that those questions are for the Israeli military, not the US.

Thousands of people had taken shelter in Shifa hospital, but health officials in Gaza announced a day earlier that many Palestinians had been displaced from the hospital as a result of the fighting.

Israel has said it has provided a safe corridor for those who want to leave. Israel has accused Hamas of having a command center under the Shifa hospital. Hamas – which launched attacks on Israel on October 7 that fueled the current war – but also health staff in Shifa, deny Israel's claims.
