Pope Leo XIV's first words: Evil will not triumph, peace in the world!

Robert Francis Prevost was elected the new Pope and took the name Leo XIV. He is the 267th Pope in the history of the Church, the first American of Italian, French and Spanish descent, born in Chicago. On the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, the new Pope's first words were Peace, a peace without weapons.

The new Pope Leo XIV began his speech with the message that "evil will not triumph, we are all in the hands of God. Without fear, united hand in hand, we will go forward, we are disciples of Christ".  These were some of his most moving words, as people cheered and applauded in St. Peter's Square, while shouting "Leo, Leo".

As an Augustinian, as he described himself, Leo XIV spoke of the need for God and Christ. He said:  "The world needs his light, humanity needs him to be reached by God and his love. Let us build bridges with dialogues, encounters, to be one people in peace."

Pope Prevost's first prayer was "for peace in the world." He recalled that today is the Day of Our Lady of Pompeii and together with the faithful present in St. Peter's Square, he recited an Ave Maria.

"Thank you Pope Francis ," was another message that the new Pope Leo XIV gave, expressing gratitude to his successor. The crowd in St. Peter's Square received this memory with long applause and enthusiasm.

The 133 cardinals elected him as Pope Francis' successor in the fourth vote. The first plume of smoke of the day, at around 11:50, was again black. At 18:08, white smoke rose.

The proclamation "Habemus Papam" was made at 7:13 PM from the Loggia of St. Peter's Basilica.
