This week, United States Air Force aircraft have been deployed to American air bases in England, including RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, adding to speculation about a reshuffle of US military capabilities in Europe.
These moves come at a time when senior American officials, including the President himself, have reopened discussions about purchasing Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark but also part of the NATO alliance.
The idea of including Greenland as part of the United States is not new, but the current rhetoric has created new concerns among allies, especially in the context of strategic rivalry with Russia and China in the Arctic.
The deployment of air forces to British bases is seen as part of a broader US military strategy, which includes strengthening its presence in Northwestern Europe and in cold areas of geostrategic importance.
