A United States Navy ship, with about 3,500 soldiers on board, has arrived in the Middle East, according to a statement from US Central Command.
It is about the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship, which, along with elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is usually deployed in Japan.
The ship was conducting exercises in the area around Taiwan before being diverted. It was reportedly ordered to move to the Middle East about two weeks ago.
Central Command announced that, in addition to military personnel, the USS Tripoli is also transporting air assets, including transport and attack aircraft, thus increasing the operational capabilities of American forces in the region.
