More than 500 staff members and contractors have left the US diplomatic mission in Iraq since Sunday morning, a source familiar with the matter said, noting that plans for the departure were underway even before the US attacks on Iran.
A State Department spokesman confirmed on Sunday that "additional personnel" left Iraq on Saturday "as part of ongoing efforts to improve operations."
"These departures represent a continuation of the process that began on June 12, when the embassy began the ordered departure out of an abundance of caution and due to high regional tensions. The Embassy and Consulate General remain open and operational ," the spokesperson said.
The US appears to be withdrawing as many personnel as possible from the Middle East to minimize casualties if Iran decides to retaliate against the US by attacking strategic American targets.
