US air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities have made the world safer, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday, dismissing fears that the move could spark a wider conflict.
"I think the world is safer and more stable today than it was 24 hours ago," he told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," warning the Middle Eastern nation that it risked further retaliation if it insisted on maintaining a "secret" nuclear program.
Rubio accused Iran of engaging in "phony negotiations" before the strikes in an attempt to "play" with US President Donald Trump.
He says the offer of diplomacy with Iran is still open and that regime change is "not the goal" of the United States.
He insisted that "we didn't make that choice" to attack, "they did" by not agreeing to a deal on Iran's nuclear program. Rubio also rejected labeling the operation a war. Furthermore, he stressed that organizations such as Hamas exist because Iran supports them.
