What the indictment against Comey portends for an agency already in turmoil...
An office at the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On one side is a glass window through which one can see the other offices. On the wall is a collection of meritorious service citations. There is a plant in the corner. It needs watering. On the desk are photographs of a smiling middle-aged woman walking on a mountain trail and of identical high school-age twin girls in front of a sailboat. Inside is Special Agent Henry Dobson. He is in his 50s, with a strong build. His dark hair is thinning. He is smiling. He sits at the desk and straightens the framed photos. He picks up the phone and dials…
Dobson [on phone]: Shelly, Hank. They just closed the bank. It's over. After five years. Five damn years. He's praying. The Brazilians closed it. Nine years, no hesitation. Very good, right? Now let's move on to the next bit of dirt... What? Come on, you can't be serious. This isn't what I do... No, no, no... What do I know about highway patrol?... This is crazy...
A new agent pokes his head into the office and tosses Dobson a sealed Manila envelope.
Young Agent: Someone brought this.
Dobson: Who?
Young Agent: Didn't say. Woman. Lots of jewelry. Big sunglasses. Slouchy hat. Quickly thrown away.
Dobson [on phone]: Wait a minute, Shelly.
Dobson opens the envelope, pulls out a sheaf of papers, and begins to leaf through them.
Dobson [murmuring]: Oh, shit… Someone just left a bunch of documents. Bank statements. Spreadsheets. Prospectus… With a memo explaining everything… It’s crypto… Fake deal… Dubai and Antigua… Looks like a fake ICO, maybe a scam… $34 million… SEC filings, wire transfers, phone numbers… Damn, all this mess… Have you ever had a box like that?… Yeah, it says who did it… A guy named Carl, uh… Wait a minute, just wait a minute, let me do something.
Dobson leaves his phone unlocked. He turns on his computer. The background image appears. It's Kevin Costner playing Eliot Ness in The Untouchables . Dobson enters his password and goes to the Google homepage. He types a few words.
Dobson [loudly on the phone]: Wait a minute. Stay right there. I'm checking...
A list of Google results appears. Dobson clicks on the first one. A large headline appears: “Cryptocurrency Entrepreneurs Gather at Mar-a-Lago.” Dobson immediately shuts down his computer.
He looks around nervously to see if anyone is watching him. He starts stuffing all the documents back into the envelope, takes the phone and places it between his face and shoulder and continues stuffing the documents into the envelope.

Not even a former FBI director is safe. And Trump is now complaining about the prosecution of Chris Wray, Comey's successor at the FBI, whom Trump appointed to the job.
If you receive a tip about a potential violation involving someone connected to Trump, you would be foolish to mention it to a colleague or supervisor. Don't write anything about it in an email.
Find a drug trafficker to pursue, unless you're reassigned to help catch immigrants.
The Trump administration has signaled that it does not want the bureau to deal with entire categories of crimes, such as foreign bribery or failure to register as foreign agents.
Attorney General Pam Bondi shut down the task force investigating foreign influence operations. In February, the head of the Justice Department’s public integrity division resigned rather than drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The division was subsequently downsized. That’s good news for dirty cops.
All of this means that a host of evildoers, including corrupt politicians and Trump cronies, have a get-out-of-jail-free card—that is, permission to cheat, con, and commit crimes with little fear of investigation or prosecution. And it’s a card that’s easy to get. In trouble with the law? Buy a million dollars in Trump’s crypto. That should keep the G-men away.
If an FBI agent were to open an investigation that annoyed Trump, he or she would have to fear losing their job and more, perhaps being harassed on social media by Trump and sent to social media by his MAGA army.
And if a brave agent were to pursue such a case, would Trump's Justice Department prosecute him against Trump's wishes? Forget it, Jake. There's no percentage in starting such an investigation. It will only lead to a world of hurt.
That’s the clear signal Trump and Patel have sent to the FBI as they shift agents to street crime and ICE support. The Comey indictment is merely an exclamation point in the “don’t mess with us” message to all federal law enforcement. Special Agent Dobson is no fool. He knows the old saying that justice is blind. In Trump’s second term, justice is now blind to the crimes of Trump and his gang. If you dare look in their direction, they’ll gouge your eyes out. /Adapted from Mother Jones/
