Footballer lost his life saving others from fire, fans: True heroes are made of

Andrej Lazarov, a 25-year-old professional footballer, lost his life as a hero in the early hours of Sunday while trying to save others from the fire that caused the tragedy in Kocani, which killed at least 59 people and injured more than 155 others.

Lazarov, a central midfielder, had joined Macedonian second-tier club FC Skopje in September. Described by his teammates as dedicated, humble and full of heart, he had quickly become a valuable presence in the dressing room.

Friends and teammates say he was deeply passionate about football and was always ready when his team or community needed him.

The fire broke out at around 2:35 a.m. local time at the nightclub during a concert by a local hip-hop group. Pyrotechnics reportedly set the roof of the venue on fire, which was filled with around 1,500 people. Amidst the panic, Lazarov acted selflessly. According to an emotional statement from FC Skopje, he was last seen trying to help people escape the fire, before eventually succumbing to smoke inhalation.

"As a heroic soul, Lazarov lost his life trying to help others escape the burning environment. He was poisoned by smoke during his efforts to save lives, showing courage and humanity to the end," the club wrote.

Tributes poured in on social media, with fans and fellow players calling Lazarov a “true hero.” One user wrote, “True heroes are made of courage,” while another said, “Rest in peace, Andrei Lazarov. You died saving others. This is the definition of bravery.”
