The Vatican has released the first image of Pope Francis since his hospitalization more than a month ago. The photo shows the leader of the Catholic Church praying in his prayer room on Sunday morning.
The 88-year-old Pope is being treated at the Xhemelli hospital in Rome and has not been seen in public since being admitted. Doctors at the institution say he is no longer in critical condition, as he is being treated for bronchitis and double pneumonia.
Earlier, the Pope said that he was facing a difficult period and expressed his gratitude for the prayers of the faithful who are helping him during this time.
Bergoglio has previously struggled with respiratory health problems, having had part of his lung removed when he was young.
Despite his health struggles, friends and biographers close to the Pope have insisted he has no plans to retire. And, despite his frail health, the Pope has continued his work from the hospital. The year 2025 is a Catholic holy year, with 32 million pilgrims expected to travel to Rome.
