A conviction ten years ago for fraud cost the British Transport Minister her post.
Louise Haigh resigned after a decade-old conviction for allegedly stealing her mobile phone came to light.
In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Haigh wrote that: “I remain fully committed to our political project, but now believe it will be better served with my support from outside government. I appreciate that whatever the facts of the case may be, this issue will inevitably be a distraction from doing the work of this government and the policies to which we are jointly committed," the minister wrote.
The resignation came hours after Sky News and The Times of London newspaper reported that the 37-year-old had been charged with fraud after she reported a work mobile phone stolen from her when it was robbed in 2013.
Haigh would later claim that he had misplaced the cell phone among the stolen items. After finding the phone and turning it back on, she was called in for questioning by the police.
Haigh pleaded guilty to fraud by misrepresentation and was granted bail. Haigh, 37, has represented a constituency in Sheffield, northern England, in parliament since 2015 and was appointed to the key transport post after Prime Minister Starmer's centre-left Labor Party won the election in July. Starmer immediately appointed 49-year-old Heidi Alexander in her place.
The question that is asked is: what about in Albania, does anyone think of resigning? People have been killed and cut and no one puts water on the fire.
