Berlin increases military readiness, new rules for movement abroad
As international conflicts escalate, Germany is taking new measures to strengthen its military capabilities, while simultaneously expanding control over citizens of draft age.
According to the Berliner Zeitung, a decision that came into effect in January 2026 means that men aged 17 to 45 who plan to stay abroad for more than three months must obtain prior authorization from the Bundeswehr, a change that comes as part of the new military service reform.
The move comes at a time when Europe's security architecture has been shaken by Russia's war in Ukraine, which has forced Berlin to review its defense strategy and significantly increase military investment.
At the same time, the escalation of the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran has created a broader regional and global crisis, with consequences for international security and the economy, including energy markets and the stability of the Gulf region.
In this context, German authorities argue that the legal changes aim to create an accurate register of persons who can be mobilized in case of emergency, including those who are abroad.
Unlike in the past, when such restrictions only applied in exceptional cases such as a state of war, the new rules also apply in peacetime, reflecting a broader shift in Germany's security policy.
The government also aims to significantly increase troop numbers in the coming years, as part of a broader transformation of the Bundeswehr and Germany's role in NATO.
However, the move has sparked debate in the country, with critics warning of the impact on individual freedoms and a gradual shift towards a stronger model of military mobilization.
Developments show that, in a climate where conflicts are spreading from Ukraine to the Middle East, even European countries are adapting their security policies, preparing for scenarios that were considered impossible until a few years ago. / Pamphlet
