US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has provided details on the arrest of the niece of the late Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and her daughter in the United States, explaining the reasons that led to the intervention of the authorities.
According to a State Department statement, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after their permanent resident status was revoked. Both lived in Los Angeles.
US authorities allege that while in the US, Afshar promoted propaganda in support of the Iranian regime, publicly expressed support for attacks on US forces and facilities in the Middle East, and supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is considered a terrorist organization by the US.
In a reaction on the X platform, Rubio confirmed that both held "green cards", which have now been canceled, and stressed that the US administration is taking action against individuals who, according to it, support structures hostile to the US.
" The Trump administration will not allow our country to become a haven for foreigners who support terrorist and anti-American regimes ," he declared.
The case comes at a time of high tensions between the US and Iran and reflects Washington's tougher stance towards individuals considered linked to Tehran's political and military structures.
