US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged to prepare a formal proposal for Washington to buy Greenland, for a potential price of up to $700 billion, according to NBC News, citing a senior White House official who asked to remain anonymous.
According to other sources on the Internet, the estimated value of $700 billion for the island was presented to US President Donald Trump by scientists and former US administration officials. Based on this estimate, the potential price tag exceeds half of the annual budget of the US Department of War.
At the same time, a much cheaper alternative for the US is being considered: the so-called Free Association Pact. This agreement would provide financial support to Greenland in exchange for permission for the presence of US troops on the island.
A day earlier, Donald Trump said that the United States needs Greenland to create the Golden Dome air defense system, emphasizing that NATO should facilitate the implementation of this plan.
As you may recall, the United States has attempted to purchase Greenland in the past, in 1867 and 1946, but without success.
