Cilia Flores, the wife of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is in critical condition at a Brooklyn detention center, according to a statement made by her lawyer in court on Monday.
According to the defense, Flores has "bruises on her ribs" and needs specialized medical care, following her arrest by US forces on Saturday, during the raid on her home in Venezuela, where Maduro was also arrested.
Federal Judge Hellerstein, who is presiding over the hearing in New York, noted that the health care issue could be addressed between defense attorneys and the prosecution, avoiding public clashes.
It is not yet officially known how Flores' physical injuries were caused, which has sparked speculation and diplomatic concern, among critics who say this could constitute a violation of human rights and the treatment of detainees on US soil.
Flores and Maduro were arrested in one of the most sensational recent operations by the Trump administration, after Washington described the Venezuelan regime as "illegitimate and dangerous to global stability."
