
Venezuela's ousted president, Nicolas Maduro, has appeared for the first time before the Manhattan Federal Court, where he has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges against him,
Meanwhile, crowds of protesters with opposing views have gathered outside the court.
"I am innocent, I plead not guilty," Maduro told federal Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein.
Meanwhile, large groups of people have gathered outside the courthouse in New York.

The two groups with opposing positions protested in parallel: one side cheered Maduro's capture, while the other side protested his detention and demanded his release.
Protesters were seen waving Venezuelan flags and chanting slogans such as: "Who are we? Venezuela! What do we want? Freedom!"
Some held signs reading "Freedom for our political prisoners in Venezuela," while others displayed banners reading "Freedom for President Maduro." A banner reading "Trump for King" was also seen at the protest .
According to the US Attorney's Office, Maduro is accused of leading "state-sponsored gangs" and corrupting state institutions to facilitate the importation of large quantities of cocaine into the United States. The charges also include matters related to weapons and international criminal cooperation.
