Hegseth on the possibility of ground operations in Iran: We want to remain

The United States intends to maintain a strategy of "unpredictability" regarding the possibility of deploying ground forces in Iran, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said, stressing that Washington has several military options available in the context of the conflict.

" You can't fight and win a war if you reveal to your adversary what you are willing to do or what you are not willing to do, including deploying troops on the ground ," he said.

Hegseth added that the Iranian side believes there are several possible ways in which the US could launch a ground operation. “ Our adversary at this point believes there are 15 different ways in which we could operate with ground forces. And, in fact, they exist ,” he said.

According to him, the United States can activate these options if the need arises, but without ruling out a diplomatic path. “ It may not be necessary to use these options at all. Perhaps negotiations will yield results or a different approach may be pursued. The key is to remain unpredictable and for no one to know exactly what we are or are not willing to do ,” Hegseth said.

For his part, the Chief of Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Dan Caine, emphasized that the spectrum of military options that Washington has is broad and that the presence of forces in the region is not only related to the possibility of ground operations.

" I wouldn't want to limit the president's decision-making space, but there are many factors that need to be taken into account. Iran needs to know that these forces are there and that they constitute a tool of pressure, which needs to be carefully assessed at the diplomatic level as well ," he said.
