Netherlands on fire/ Violent protests against immigration, police disperse

Dutch police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse a violent anti-immigration protest in the city of The Hague on Saturday afternoon, where hundreds of people clashed with police and displayed far-right symbols.

According to the national news agency ANP, about 1,500 protesters blocked a highway in the city, while a police car was burned. In clashes with police, 30 people were arrested and two officers were injured. Protesters threw stones and bottles, while waving Dutch flags and far-right symbols.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof called the violence “shocking and shameful,” describing it as “completely unacceptable.” Far-right leader Geert Wilders, who led the last election and is expected to remain the favorite in the October 29 vote, also said that “attacks on police are disgusting” and blamed the violence on “idiots who do not represent the cause.”

The protest was organized by far-right activists, who are calling for tougher measures against immigrants and asylum seekers. The situation escalated when a group of protesters attacked the offices of the center-left D66 party, considered by the far-right to represent the progressive elite. The windows of the headquarters were broken and considerable damage was caused inside the office.

D66 leader Rob Jetten reacted angrily: "If you think you can scare us, you are sorely mistaken. We will never let extremist vandals take our place."

No one was inside the offices at the time of the attack, according to official party sources.

The political crisis in the Netherlands deepened in June, when the government fell after Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV) withdrew from the ruling coalition over disagreements over immigration policy. Wilders had called for a temporary ban on asylum, a halt to the construction of reception centers and restrictions on family reunification - demands that were rejected by his government partners.
