Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, has given his first public message since taking office. The statement was broadcast on Iranian state television, while the leader himself has not yet appeared in public.
In his message, Khamenei called for national unity at a tense moment for Iran, while warning that the Strait of Hormuz will continue to remain closed and will be used as a tool of pressure on opponents.
"The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as a means of pressure and American bases in the region must be closed, otherwise they will be attacked," Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said.
The statement also contained a direct warning to the United States. The new Iranian leader said that American bases in the region must be closed, adding that otherwise they could become targets of attacks.
The message was read by a presenter on state television, while Khamenei did not appear in person. He has reportedly not appeared in public since his appointment as head of the Islamic Republic following the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
