Spanish newspaper ABC describes the new reality of Venezuela's powerful former leader, Nicolas Maduro, who now lives locked in a cramped detention center behind a heavy metal door. Inside his cell is a metal bed fixed to the wall, while the metallic sound of locking mechanisms sets the rhythm of his daily life.
According to sources familiar with his situation and quoted by the media, during the night the silence of the prison is interrupted by his voice heard from the cell: "I am the president of Venezuela! Tell my country that they have kidnapped me and that they are mistreating us here."
This scene is not recorded in any court decision and is not documented in official proceedings. However, according to witnesses, it is a narrative circulating inside the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, the federal prison where Maduro has been held since January 3, the day he was arrested and transferred to New York.
In this correctional complex, one of the strictest in the federal system in the New York area, prison life begins for a politician who for more than a decade had concentrated power in Venezuela.
"Hell on Earth"
The MDC Center is striking at first glance: a giant concrete cube built in an industrial area of Brooklyn, near the bay. The first impression is one of heavy mass and absolute isolation. However, according to those who have passed by, the facade is not the worst part of the building, the interior is even more difficult.
"It's hell on earth," says Sam Mangel, a correctional system consultant who has worked with inmates in federal prisons for years. According to him, the MDC is known for serious shortcomings.
"It's in a state of neglect, with limited funding and insufficient staff. It's a place where no one would want to spend a minute," says Mangel.
Other reports cite heating problems in previous winters, the presence of rodents and limited medical care. In December, an inmate died after a delayed diagnosis of lung cancer, according to public documents, while complaints about low temperatures and humidity are frequent.

The specific illnesses were not specified.
Meanwhile, Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores requested a consular visit from Venezuela, a request that was approved by the court. The visit took place on January 30 and was one of the few official contacts during the isolation.
