US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the high gas prices Americans are currently paying are a temporary sacrifice that, according to him, will bring benefits in the long term.
In an interview with CNN, Wright stressed that economic and military pressure on Iran is aimed at weakening Tehran's ability to threaten American troops, US allies and global energy markets.
"We are harming Iran's ability to threaten US troops in the region, allies and global energy markets. Sometimes you have to endure short-term pain to solve a long-term problem," Wright said, calling this a form of strong leadership from President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Iran has warned that oil prices could reach $200 per barrel, double the current level, the spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ebrahim Zolfaqari, told Reuters.
However, Wright described this scenario as unlikely, emphasizing that the US remains the world's largest oil producer and that the global market has other sources of supply.
According to energy market experts, even if the Strait of Hormuz were blocked for a long period, the price of oil could reach around $150 per barrel.
Such a level would exceed the historical record set in 2008, a period when rising energy prices were one of the factors contributing to the global financial crisis.
