The first images have emerged of tsunami waves hitting the coast of Japan after today's magnitude 7.4 earthquake.
Waves measuring about half a meter are now threatening coastal areas.
The northeastern coast of Japan was hit on Monday by a strong earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale.
The national meteorological agency issued a three-meter tsunami warning for Iwate prefecture and parts of Hokkaido and Aomori.
The first waves have started hitting the coast of Japan, with the biggest so far recorded at 80cm, according to the country's meteorological agency.

The tsunami is expected to hit Iwate prefecture and parts of Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures. In some other areas in the northeast, the tsunami could reach up to 1 meter in height.
