British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing one of the most serious challenges of his term so far, following a security clearance scandal surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the US.
Revelations that the Foreign Office gave Mandelson a high level of security clearance, against the advice of the British security clearance agency, have prompted calls for the prime minister to resign.
The sacking of the Foreign Office's permanent secretary, Olly Robbins, has deepened the crisis, opening a public clash between Downing Street and senior civilian officials over who knew what about the vetting process and when.
The coming weeks are set to bring some critical moments for the British prime minister. Starmer will face MPs in the House of Commons today in what his allies are hailing as a defining statement for his term.
Robbins will appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday with his version of events. Meanwhile, local elections in May will give voters their first chance to cast their vote. Here are two scenarios for how Starmer could lose his job, and two paths to his political survival.
Starmer will fall before the local elections
The pressure on Starmer is so great that his departure before the local elections in May is a possibility that cannot be ruled out. But the most immediate threat comes from the pace of revelations about Mandelson, not from a single development.
Robbins was sacked on Thursday evening over the scandal. The move has sparked fresh controversy, with his allies publicly challenging Downing Street's version of events and accusing it of scapegoating him.
Starmer has said it is “shocking” and “inexcusable” that he was not informed that Mandelson had failed security clearance, claiming he only learned this on Tuesday, April 14. But this claim is disputed.
Former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said it was “unimaginable” that the Prime Minister had been kept in the dark about the matter. Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition Conservatives, Kemi Badenoch, accused Starmer of misleading parliament about the outcome of Mandelson’s vetting, claiming he failed to correct the information in time.

If this convinces the public, it will raise the possibility that Starmer was effectively kept in the dark.
If his statement in parliament is well received and if the investigation does not yield any new damaging revelations, political tension may ease. So far, no serious candidate has declared leadership ambitions.
