Israeli soldiers, backed by helicopters, admitted killing at least two gunmen who crossed the border from Lebanon. This signals the opening of a new front as Israeli forces continue to clash with Palestinian Hamas militants in Gaza.
Artillery shelling and gunfire were heard on Lebanon's southern border with Israel, near the city of Dajra, reported Al-Manar television, which is the medium of the Hezbollah movement. It is reported that the group of armed men approached the border and opened fire on Israeli soldiers.
In a statement, the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement denied involvement in "any clashes between members of the resistance and enemy Israel, or any infiltration attempts" into Israel. The Israeli military said military helicopters are "currently carrying out attacks in the area" near the border. Since October 7, Israel has been fighting the Palestinian militants of Hamas, who launched a massive attack from Gaza.
On October 8, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a rocket and artillery attack on the Israeli-occupied Sheba Farms, saying it was "in solidarity" with the Palestinian people. To this attack, Israel responded with attacks in Lebanon. Israel has declared a state of war and called up nearly 300,000 soldiers to fight against Hamas, as the death toll in Israel and Gaza has exceeded 1,000.
Also, Israeli authorities have ordered a complete siege of Gaza, a territory ruled by Hamas since 2007. Both Hamas and Hezbollah are recognized as terrorist organizations by the United States and other Western powers.
