Meet the head of Hamas, who seems to have given Israel's leadership a "headache"...
It was 2011 when Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to release 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, among them Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the fundamentalist group that now holds the fate of hostages taken by terrorists.
He had served twenty years in prison, sentenced to four life sentences also for the murder of those he considered collaborators, accused of having given information to the enemy.
Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar was born in 1962 in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis and attended Khan Yunis Boys High School. After high school, he attended the Islamic University of Gaza, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Arabic studies.
While attending university in 1982, Sinwar was arrested for the first time. In prison he befriended Palestinian activists and decided to dedicate himself to the Palestinian cause.
In 1985, Sinwar founded Hamas's security branch, whose work included punishing violators of "morality" and killing Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel. His enthusiasm for executing accomplices led Israeli interrogators to refer to him as "The Butcher of Khan Younis".
In 1988, Sinwar was arrested again and sentenced to four life terms in an Israeli prison for attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm through sabotage. During his confinement, Sinwari's life was saved when he underwent brain surgery, reportedly to remove a tumor.
Sinwar was released in 2011, one of a total of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners exchanged for a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, who was captured in 2006 and held hostage in Gaza for five years by Hamas. Sinwar was the oldest prisoner released. He said he devoted his time in prison to studying his enemy.
In March 2021, Sinwar was elected to a second four-year term as head of the organization's political bureau in Gaza in a secret election. He is the top Hamas official in Gaza and the de facto ruler of the Strip. He is the second most powerful member of Hamas after Ismail Haniyeh.
A neighbor and playmate was Mohammed Dahlan, who would become an adversary (never a personal one) in the war between Palestinian factions: Yahya with Hamas, Mohammed with the Fatah established by Yasser Arafat. Mohammed, who as director of preventive security in Gaza, cut off the beards of devout Islamists in defiance. Yahia does not allow opponents within his kingdom that lies between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
