The United States Secret Service has responded to the shooting at an event attended by US President Donald Trump, stating that the rapid intervention of security forces prevented a "national tragedy."
In a statement from Deputy Director Matthew Quinn, it is said that the suspect was neutralized immediately after coming into contact with security forces.
"Tonight, an individual attempted to create a national tragedy. He underestimated the protective capabilities of the Secret Service and was stopped at first contact," the statement said.
According to him, the security system functioned properly, preventing the situation from escalating, while other additional control measures were in place.
Quinn adds that the intervention was the result of close cooperation between Secret Service agents and other law enforcement agencies, emphasizing their professionalism in managing the incident.

The President and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated and none of those present were seriously injured, authorities said.
A Secret Service agent was hit by at least one bullet fired by the shooter, but the agent was protected by a bulletproof vest and is reportedly out of danger, officials said.
The suspect, identified to CBS News by law enforcement sources as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, was arrested at the scene.
Officials have not released information on the suspect's possible motive, but two sources told CBS News that he told law enforcement after his arrest that he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials.
A total of at least five to eight shots were fired during the incident. In a late-night news conference, Jeff Carroll, the interim chief of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and several knives when he attempted to storm a security checkpoint outside the Washington Hilton Hotel.
