World leaders have reacted strongly to the shooting at the Washington Hilton Hotel during the White House Correspondents' Dinner, which was attended by Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
Among the leaders who have reacted is the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni. She expresses her full solidarity and most sincere closeness to President Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance and all those present for what happened during the event.
Meloni writes that no political hatred can find a place in democracy.
"We will not allow bigotry to poison places of free debate and information. Defending the culture of confrontation must remain an insurmountable bastion against any intolerant deviation, to protect the values that founded our nations," she emphasizes.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also reacted after the incident. He expressed shock at the incident and said that any attack on democratic institutions and press freedom should be severely condemned.
Starmer added that it is a relief that President Trump, the First Lady and all those present are in good health.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reacted through a post on "X" regarding the shooting recorded during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Erdogan condemned the attack while adding that in a democracy, war is waged with ideas and that there is no place for any form of violence.
"I condemn the attempted armed attack that occurred last night at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington. It is fortunate that no one, including President Trump and his wife Melania, was injured."
"In a democracy, war is waged with ideas; there is no place for any form of violence. I extend my best wishes to President Trump, his wife, the American administration and the American people," Erdogan wrote.
The incident occurred shortly after the event began, when a loud noise caused panic in the hall. Those present lay on the floor, while security services immediately intervened and evacuated the hall.
The President and First Lady were evacuated by security forces, while the suspected perpetrator was arrested on the spot. Investigations to fully unravel the case are ongoing.
