Strongest earthquake in decades in Taiwan, more than 100 trapped under rubble;

Rescuers are scrambling to reach more than 100 people trapped in mining areas and a national park after the strongest earthquake in decades hit Taiwan, killing nine and injuring hundreds.

Search efforts around the worst-hit city of Hualien on the east coast have been hampered by more than 50 aftershocks recorded since the quake struck on Wednesday morning, Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.

About 80 people are believed to be trapped in the mining areas.

Rescuers knew the location of dozens of other people trapped in a network of heavily constructed tunnels in the county, a feature of the roads that cut through the scenic mountains and cliffs that lead to the city of Hualien from the north and west.

About 50 hotel workers are believed to be stranded in Taroko National Park after their convoy of four minibuses was blocked on a mountain road by a landslide. Mobile phone signals suggest they may have taken refuge in the Jiuqiu cave system, local reports said, and rescue teams are now trying to clear a path to reach them.

Taiwan is still assessing the aftermath of the quake, given a magnitude of 7.2 by its earthquake monitoring agency, 7.4 by the US and 7.7 by Japan, which struck near Hualien, a city popular with tourists on Taiwan's east coast. damaging buildings and trapping people amid dozens of aftershocks.

It is Taiwan's strongest since 1999, when a magnitude 7.6 earthquake 93 miles (150 km) south of Taipei killed 2,400 and injured 10,000.
