At least 13 people have died in the extreme heat wave that has plagued the southern United States in the past two weeks, US officials said on Friday.
The largest number of deaths, namely 11 people, was recorded in Texas, near the border with Mexico.
"Since Wednesday, there have been 11 deaths in total," local officials said in a statement to AFP.
A 14-year-old boy died last week while walking in a park in Texas, where temperatures reached 48 degrees Celsius.
Tragically, the victim's stepfather died in a car accident while rushing to save the boy.
Meanwhile, a 62-year-old woman died in the neighboring state of Louisiana last week after a storm left thousands of families without power and air conditioning, according to local officials.
In recent days, temperatures in several southern US cities have been very high and local authorities in Texas have set up several cooling centers. /REL
