Sanctioned by the US, the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska resigns

Radovan Viskovic, prime minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina's entity, Republika Srpska, resigned from his post on Monday, August 18th.

He is a member of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, led by Milorad Dodik.

Viskovic has been at the head of the Government of Republika Srpska since 2018, while his mandate has often been criticized by the opposition for the way the entity's resources are managed, and for his approach to the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since July 2023, Viskovic has been on the United States sanctions list due to threats to the Dayton Peace Agreement and violation of the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As the US Treasury Department announced at the time, Viskovic is one of the leaders in RS who is responsible for “promoting the adoption of laws in the People’s Assembly of Republika Srpska, by which the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina are declared unenforceable in RS, thus hindering and jeopardizing the implementation of the Dayton Agreement.”

These sanctions include banning entry into the US and freezing assets located under their jurisdiction.

Viskovic is also one of the suspects in the investigation by the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the criminal offense of attacking the constitutional order.

Dodik, president of Republika Srpska, and Nenad Stevandic, speaker of the entity's parliament, are also accused of the same offense./ REL
