The role of drones in the Russian invasion of Ukraine has set a precedent and demonstrated how the use of technology, even the simplest (even "consumer" in some cases), but adapted for military use, can change the course of a 21st century war. Now, a new episode marks a first in military history and in the use of robotic technologies on the battlefield.

According to the Ukrainian military report, well documented by video and photos, a fortified Russian position was completely neutralized and its inhabitants were taken prisoner by Kiev forces. What is new is that the protagonists of the action were exclusively robots and drones, without the involvement of a single (real) Ukrainian soldier on the front line. In the distance, a specialized unit of the Kiev army, an elite experimental group calling itself "Deus ex machina" and part of the 3rd Assault Brigade, operated.

The operation, carried out around July 8 and 9 in the Kharkiv Oblast, involved the combined use of FPV (First Person View) drones and kamikaze ground robots. We are not talking about Terminator-style humanoid robots, but about more common mini-tracking vehicles, but just as effective and terrifying to those on the battlefield. One of these vehicles, loaded with a significant amount of explosives, the equivalent of over 20 kilograms of TNT, hit the entrance to a Russian trench. The impact was so strong that, when a second ground robot approached, the few surviving Russian soldiers did not hesitate to surrender.

In the released videos, soldiers can be seen showing the Ukrainians, who were following the scene from a distance via aerial drone cameras, a sign that read: "We want to surrender."
