An Istanbul court on Wednesday handed down a new prison sentence to Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a main rival of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, state broadcaster TRT reported. The decision by the Istanbul Court is another blow to the opposition.
Imamoglu, who has been in jail awaiting trial since March on separate corruption charges, was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for insulting and threatening the Istanbul chief prosecutor.
The prison sentence must be confirmed by two appeals courts.
This is the second time Imamoglu has been convicted of insulting public officials. In 2022, Imamoglu was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for criticizing election board officials over a decision to annul the 2019 Istanbul election, in which he defeated the ruling AK Party candidate.
He has appealed this sentence, but it has not yet been reviewed. Imamoglu denies the charges.
"I have fought against the abuse of the judiciary and against its use as a political tool. This is truly an insult against our nation," Imamoglu was quoted as saying by broadcaster Halk TV and other Turkish media.
