Iran and the United States have made "some progress" in efforts to reach a deal to end weeks of fighting, but major disagreements remain, mainly over Tehran's nuclear program, a senior Iranian official said, quoted by Reuters.
The source added that more than half of a two-week ceasefire had already passed without overcoming the main differences between the two sides, mainly over Iran's nuclear ambitions. He said a visit by Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Tehran had helped narrow differences in some areas, raising hopes for an extension of the ceasefire and a resumption of talks between Tehran and Washington.
"The Pakistani army chief's trip to Tehran was effective in narrowing differences on some issues, but fundamental disagreements remain on the nuclear front... There was more hope for an extension of the ceasefire and a second round of talks," the senior official said.
He added that the fate of Iran's highly enriched uranium and the duration of restrictions on its nuclear program remain among the most contentious issues, for which a solution has not yet been found.
