Iran has reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump's statements about Pope Leo XIV, describing them as insulting and unacceptable.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a public message, condemned Trump's comments, stressing that attacks on religious figures contradict universal values.
"I condemn the insult to Your Excellency on behalf of the great nation of Iran and declare that the desecration of Jesus, the prophet of peace and brotherhood, is not acceptable to any free person," he said, adding: "I wish you glory from Allah."
Along the same lines, Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications in the Iranian presidency, hardened the rhetoric by comparing the situation to a "character assassination."
"When the great religious leader of the Islamic world is assassinated with such brazen audacity and Westerners watch in silence, it is no wonder they would resort to character assassination of the great leader of the world's Christians, His Holiness Pope Leo ," he declared.
The reactions from Tehran come after comments made the day before by Donald Trump, who said he was "not a fan of Pope Leo", criticizing his stance on the conflict with Iran and adding that the Pope is "terrible at foreign policy".
For his part, Pope Leo XIV has responded to criticism in clear tones, emphasizing his religious mission.
"I'm not afraid of the Trump administration or of speaking out loud for the Gospel message, which I believe I'm here to do ," he told reporters.
