German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is skeptical about the talks between the United States and Iran, held over the weekend in Islamabad, stressing that he did not have high expectations for their outcome.
In a statement from Berlin, Merz said that the breakdown in talks was no surprise to him.
"From the beginning I didn't get the impression that these negotiations were particularly well prepared ," he said.
The head of the German government underlined that reaching a diplomatic solution is not expected to be quick, warning that the economic consequences of the conflict will continue to be felt for a long time.
"This is a long-term process and the effects of this war will continue to be felt even after it is over ," Merz added.
Even earlier, the chancellor had expressed reservations about the success of the negotiations, assessing that a peace agreement still remains distant.
On the other hand, the Chancellor's spokesman stressed that diplomacy remains the only way to resolve the current situation, adding that Germany has a fundamental interest in its success.
Merz also commented on US President Donald Trump's statements about a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, describing them as an attempt to increase pressure on Iran. According to him, referring to a statement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), any such action would target Iranian ports and not a complete blockade of the strait.
