Israel prepares tanks to enter Gaza: how successful the attack and challenge of
Hamas tunnels

Israel has started to enter Gaza. Tanks have started to cross the border, while citizens have been warned to flee to the south urgently. But launching a ground operation will be challenging.

Hamas has hidden the command underground. A center with protected spaces, communications, secure environments to hold some of the officers, including those who coordinate the launch of the missiles. The civilians above them act as human shields. The bunker is connected to the extensive network of tunnels in the Belt.

"A spider's web inside which you walk without stopping," said one of the women released a few days ago after living as a prisoner in the hands of the Mujahideen. Reports released by the General Staff speak of an "underground city," an evolution of a project begun in the 1990s to bring in food and other supplies from Egypt.

After Israel's withdrawal, the Palestinians combined military use with trafficking, and gradually tunnels appeared through which they could import war materials and pass people. Mohammed Deif himself, the head of the Brigades, returned to Gaza in 2007 through the tunnels. Then the third step: building tunnels to infiltrate Israel and take hostages, a successful operation. Finally, the fourth step: the birth of a real system. Concrete tunnels, posts connected to warehouses, "nests" of guns and anti-tanks.

Depth is variable. According to geologist Joel Roskin, in border areas it ranges from 4 to 12 meters, below which collapses can occur. Excavation is greatest near buildings that protect access, allow electricity and water connections, and conceal any movement. Generators provide an alternative source, especially in critical phases. Over time, the tunnels have been transformed into complex works with vertical or stepped entrances, elaborate roads, communication facilities and dormitories. Their detection is very difficult. Sensors help, but they detect within a limited range and can only be used under certain conditions. Revelation from heaven is impossible.

Israel has invested millions in research and equipment, conducted tests, consulted with the US about drug tunnels, but has not found the final answer. In fact, the complete reclamation of these labyrinths may force the commandos to enter the tunnels. Camera dogs, drones and technology help, but in the end it's up to the soldiers to act as "rats" imitating the Vietnam-era Americans in the Cu-Chi tunnels. / Pamphlet
