Israel has called for new sanctions on Iran at a UN Security Council meeting. Israel's envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has asked the council to "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it is too late" and "condemn Iran".
This comes shortly after the UN secretary-general called for restraint for fear of an escalation following Iran's attacks on Israel.
"Neither the region nor the world can afford another war," António Guterres told the body's Security Council as it met to discuss Saturday's Iranian attack.
"The Middle East is on the brink of war," he warned.
"The people of the region are facing a real risk of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse the situation."
Iran's UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, responded by saying the Islamic republic was exercising its "natural right to self-defense" and had "no choice" but to act.
He insisted that his country "does not seek escalation or war", but will respond to any "threat or aggression". Iran's mission to the United Nations also warned Washington to stay out of its conflict with Israel.
Iran launched its first direct attack on Israeli territory in retaliation for a deadly airstrike widely blamed on Israel that destroyed Tehran's consulate building in the Syrian capital in April.
