The Israeli military (IDF) stated today that Hezbollah is planning a larger-than-usual rocket attack overnight.
According to the IDF, authorities took the unusual step of warning the home front in advance. The decision came after an incident last week, when the military had information about a possible escalation of attacks but failed to issue a timely warning to the population.
In that case, Hezbollah doubled the pace of attacks, increasing the number of rockets from about 100 per day to 200.
According to the army statement, the group had planned to launch up to 600 rockets, but preemptive strikes by the Israeli air force limited its capacity.
The IDF announced that once again the air force is acting to prevent a possible wider attack, while the warning is intended to give civil authorities and citizens time to take protective measures.
The military stressed that the situation is under control and urged citizens not to panic, but to stay close to shelters and safe rooms.
According to the IDF, there is a possibility that Iran could also be involved, although the main threat is considered to come from Hezbollah.
