Israel deploys elite "Alpinists" unit, operations on frozen borders

The unit consists of reservists specialized for operations in extreme winter conditions.

Dressed in white and moving over frozen peaks, Israeli soldiers seem detached from the harsh reality of the Middle East. The landscape resembles more an Arctic expedition than a war zone.

However, these are elite Israeli forces operating on the mountainous borders of Syria and Lebanon, on one of the most sensitive and dangerous fronts in the region.

For the first time, footage from the activities of the special unit "Alpinists" has been made public, during a mission aimed at preventing terrorist acts and removing threats from strategic points.

Special forces for extreme environments

This unit is made up of reservists specialized in operations in extreme winter conditions. They train for months in difficult terrain, in very low temperatures, while using equipment such as skis and special snowmobiles to ensure speed and stealth.

In the latest operation, the unit members crossed heavily snow-covered areas on foot from Mount Hermon in Syria to the Mount Dov area in southern Lebanon. The slopes were so steep and dangerous that the scenes resembled war movies, with soldiers facing not only the enemy but also the natural conditions.

Their mission included reconnaissance, information gathering, and identification of terrorist infrastructures, in an area where conditions require high physical endurance and operational precision.

Clashes with Hezbollah and the strategic importance of the area

In recent weeks, Israeli forces have been engaged in ongoing clashes with Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters. However, according to the Israeli military, they are no match for the specialized techniques of the "mountaineers" in harsh winter conditions.

Mount Hermon, which straddles the border between Syria and Lebanon, is of particular strategic importance. It was captured by Israel in December 2024, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, and has since been considered a key point for monitoring the region.

It is no coincidence that it is called the "eyes of the country", as it offers panoramic views and early warning capabilities against attacks that may come from Syrian or Lebanese territory.

Israel maintains military bases inside Syria, arguing that this presence is necessary to stop the transfer of weapons to hostile organizations. In parallel, it aims to create an advanced defensive line in southern Lebanon, a move that has provoked reactions and increased tensions in the region.

Views from the field and daily life at the front

The photographs released by the Israeli army reflect the reality of the operations: soldiers immersed up to their waists in snow, climbing steep slopes, sometimes during the day and sometimes at night with the help of optical systems.

These operations are not only confrontations with the adversary, but also with extreme weather conditions, which test the limits of soldiers.

The unit belongs to Brigade 810 and, in addition to offensive operations, also has protective duties for the safety of Israeli civilians in border areas.

Escalation of the conflict and the international dimension

The operation takes place at a time when the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran and its allies has entered its fifth week, without an apparent solution, either military or diplomatic.

United States President Donald Trump is reportedly willing to approve ground operations, a scenario that could lead to a significant escalation of the conflict.

In such a situation, tensions could spread further, with new Israeli operations in Lebanon and Syria, where the "mountaineer" unit is expected to once again play a role on the front lines against a well-equipped but less specialized opponent.

The frozen Hermon front is not just another war zone. It is a space where geography, climatic conditions, and strategic importance intersect, directly influencing developments in an already highly tense region.
