Israel has presented a proposal to Hamas that includes a one-week pause in exchange for the release of 40 hostages, CNN reports.
The proposal aims to release hostages who include women, the elderly and those in need of urgent care.
The agreement is being presented to Hamas through Qatari intermediaries. Michael Herzog, the Israeli ambassador to the United States of America, confirmed that Israel is willing to stop fighting if it comes to the release of the hostages, but did not confirm whether any deal had been reached.
Hamas has made it clear that no more hostages will be released until there is a ceasefire. But as diplomatic efforts continue, the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave worsens by the day. Nearly 20,000 people have been killed by Israeli military actions in Gaza since October 7, and more than 52,000 have been injured.
Meanwhile, much of northern Gaza has been devastated by airstrikes and, according to the United Nations, almost 1.9 million people, more than 80% of the enclave's population, have been displaced.
