The Supreme Court excludes Donald Trump from the presidential election

Colorado's Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump cannot run for president next year in the state, citing a constitutional clause.

The court ruled that Mr Trump was not a suitable candidate because he had been involved in an uprising over rioting at the US Capitol nearly three years earlier.

Trump's campaign called the decision undemocratic and said it would appeal.

This is the first use of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution to disqualify a presidential candidate.

Similar efforts to get Mr Trump off the ballot in New Hampshire, Minnesota and Michigan have failed.

Tuesday's ruling does not apply to states other than Colorado. The ruling applies only to the state's March 5 primary, when Republican voters will choose their preferred presidential candidate, though it could also affect Colorado's general election next November.

"We are mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions the law requires us to make ," the judges said.

The ruling overturns an earlier ruling by a Colorado judge, which ruled that the 14th Amendment's sedition ban did not apply to presidents because the section did not explicitly mention them.
